SSSTS REFRESHER COURSE
Objectives
On successful completion of the SSSTS Refresher training course delegates will be able to:
- Understand problems currently highlighted in the industry within their role.
- Have an understanding of how health and safety law is currently structured.
- Identify how their supervisory role fits in with the manager in controlling the site safely.
- Carry out site inductions, briefings, tool box talks and understand the need for method statements.
- Improve communication routes within site activities.
Assessment
At the end of the CITB SSSTS Refresher course, delegates are required to sit an exam paper consisting of 25 questions, of which 4 are safety-critical and require a short written answer. Multiple choice questions are worth 1 point each and safety-critical questions are worth 1-3 points each.
In order to pass the course, delegates MUST answer ALL of safety-critical questions correctly. The SSSTS Refresher Course pass rate is 80% (24 out of 30).
Delegates that successfully complete the assessment are awarded the CITB SSSTS – Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme certificate which is valid for 5 years.

Any delegate with a current SSSTS certificate which is due to expire.
What next?
The suggested progression should be the five-day CITB Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) training course.

Prerequisites
Only those delegates that have passed the two-day Site Supervision Safety Training Scheme (SSSTS) course and can provide evidence of this are eligible to attend the one-day refresher course. Delegates must have passed the full SSSTS course within five years of their refresher course start date to be eligible.
A good understanding of spoken and written English will be necessary in order to attend and complete the course successfully.
The SSSTS Refresher training course will cover the following topics:
- Current enforcement priorities / HSE / Environment
- Fire risks and emergency procedures and reporting.
- Best practice updates:
- Noise and vibration
- Dermatitis
- Asbestos
- Drugs and alcohol
- Stress factors
- Dynamic risk assessment procedures
- Hazardous substances
- Work at height
- Manual handling
- Tool box talks
All Trainers at EM Construction Training hold numerous health and safety qualifications such as the NEBOSH General Certificate, and the NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health & Safety which is well above the required industry standard to ensure that the delivery of the course is to the highest standard.
Candidates approaching the end of the 5 years can opt to upgrade to a SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training Scheme) qualification which can allow them to progress onto working as a SITE Manager.
The CITB grants are available for companies who are registered for the Grant and Levy scheme. For the SSSTS Course, subject to CITB approval, you may be able to claim back £70.
The process for the grant is straightforward. The candidate must provide the Company Name, Registered address, and CITB Levy number. These details will be collected on the first day of the course on the delegate notification form.
Once received, CITB will then process the claim as per their procedure. SRP Training is not responsible for the actual claim and as such, once the details have been provided, the company must contact CITB for any updates or queries.
Yes, it is accredited by the CITB which stands for the Construction Industry Training Board for short.
Are there any prerequisites for the Course?There are no prerequisites for the course, but all delegates are expected to already have a valid CSCS card.
What are the hours of the course?The hours are 9am to 5pm for both weekend and weekday courses approximately.
Can I come in and see you face to face as that would give me peace of mind?Yes, absolutely! We encourage our customers to have a face-to-face discussion with us regarding their training course and training needs.
