The CPCS A58 course varies depending on whether one is a novice or an experienced operative simply looking to get certified. You should select a course that is aligned to your experience.

Typically, the Novice course runs over Five (5) days to cover both the theory and practical elements of the CPCS A58 Excavator test.

The experienced operator runs over two (2) days and covers the theory element of the CPCS A58 Excavator test that you shall take at the end of your training.

At the end of your training, you shall take a theory & practical CPCS A58 Excavator test; the CPCS theory tests is verbally relayed meaning that you shall be asked questions by the CPCS tester without the need for you to write or use a computer to answer questions.

The practical test shall involve you operating a 360 excavator under the observation of a CPCS tester; you MUST pass both the theory & practical CPCS tests in order for you to get a CPCS card.

Note: if you fail the CPCS theory test, you shall not be able to take a CPCS practical test.

Course Content

The course shall cover the following elements:

  • Fit and operate ancillary equipment
  • Operate the A58 Excavator 360 Below 10 Tonne tracked safely and productively
  • Carry out minor adjustments and routine servicing procedures
  • Understand the capabilities, purposes and limitations of each machine
  • Follow all necessary safety precautions
  • Interpret the information provided by level pegs and profiles
  • Be aware of the necessary routine adjustments and service procedures, and carry them out
  • Work to levels with the aid of laser equipment
  • Operate the machine to a minimum standard
  • Understand which routine adjustments and safety checks are legally required with regard to lifting accessories, and know how to carry them out
Entry Requirements

Your endorsements for this course shall include:

  • A58A Excavator 360° below 10 tonnes – Tracked
  • A58B Excavator 360° below 10 tonnes – Wheeled
  • A58C Excavator 360º below 10 tonnes – Lifting Operations

This course will give delegates a CPCS Red Trained Operator card (on successful completion of CPCS Technical Tests).

Trained Operator Card (RED)

The Trained Operator Card confirms a level of core skills, knowledge and understanding that can be applied in the workplace until measured as competent against national standards.

Progression to Blue ‘Competent operator’ CPCS card

Once you’ve obtained your Red CPCS Trained Operator Card, it will last for 2 years. During these 2 years, you must work towards and achieve your NVQ in Plant Operations to upgrade to a Blue CPCS Competence Card that is valid for 5 years.

The Blue Competent Operator CPCS card is achieved through completing a Plant operations NVQ at level 2; EM Construction Training does offer the NVQ required.

You do not need to take any further exams or come to a training center; we will come to your site or remotely assess you for your NVQ.

The plant operations NVQ required for this category is made up of only 3 units; these can be completed through observations, video recordings, written tasks etc.

Our A58 360 Excavator below 10 Tonne course tutors are qualified and experienced health and safety professionals, with extensive experience in Construction and Risk Management. All Trainers at EM Construction Training hold numerous health and safety qualifications such as the NEBOSH General Certificate, and the NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health & Safety which is well above the required industry standard to ensure that the delivery of the course is to the highest standard.
On Site Training
EM Construction Training can also provide companies with A58 360 Excavator below 10 Tonne Training at their venue. A trainer can be sent to the company address and deliver the course if there are a minimum of 6 candidates. Please contact the office for this service.
