CPCS A59A Excavator 360° Above 10 Tonnes – Tracked
The CPCS A59A Excavator 360° Above 10 Tonnes (Tracked) course is designed for both novice and experienced operators. Your training duration and course content will depend on your level of experience.
It’s important to select the course that aligns with your background.
Course Options
Novice Operators
The novice course runs over six (6) days and covers both the theory and practical elements required for the CPCS A59A Excavator Test.
Experienced Operators
The experienced operator course runs over two (2) days and focuses primarily on the theory element of the CPCS A59A Excavator Test, which you will take at the end of your training.
CPCS Tests
At the end of your training, you will take both a theory and practical CPCS A59A Excavator Test.
The theory test is verbally conducted – the CPCS tester will ask you questions directly (no writing or computer work required).
The practical test involves operating a 360° tracked excavator under the observation of a CPCS tester.
You must pass both the theory and practical tests to obtain your CPCS Trained Operator (Red) Card.
> ⚠️ If you fail the theory test, you will not be permitted to take the practical test.
Entry Requirements
You must have passed either a valid NOCN HSE test or a CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) test within the last 24 months.
Please note this requirement applies to the test, not the card.
Failure to provide proof of a valid, in-date test pass before the course begins will prevent you from taking your CPCS tests.
> ❌ No refunds will be issued for cancellations, missed courses, or inability to take exams due to an invalid or missing test, failure to attend, or test failure.

Endorsements and Key Notes
This CPCS category covers the following:
A59A – Excavator 360° Above 10 Tonnes (Tracked)
Key Note:
Holding the A59A (Tracked) category automatically includes competence for A58A (Excavator 360° Below 10 Tonnes – Tracked).
Only A59A will appear on your CPCS card, but it confirms your competence in both A59A and A58A.
Qualification Outcome
Upon successful completion of both CPCS technical tests, you will receive a CPCS Red Trained Operator Card.
Progression to the Blue ‘Competent Operator’ CPCS Card
The Red Trained Operator Card confirms you have achieved the required core skills, knowledge, and understanding to operate safely and effectively. It is valid for 2 years.
Within this time, you must complete an NVQ in Plant Operations (Level 2) to upgrade to a Blue Competent Operator CPCS Card, which is valid for 5 years.
EM Construction Training offers the required NVQ assessment, which can be completed on-site or remotely — there’s no need to attend a training centre.
The NVQ for this category consists of three (3) units, which can be completed through observations, video recordings, written tasks, and other evidence.
