Course Overview
The CPCS A58 course is available for both novice and experienced operatives. Please select the option that matches your current level of experience.
Novice Operators
The novice route runs over five (5) days, covering all theory and practical training required to prepare for the CPCS A58 Excavator tests.
Experienced Operators
The experienced operator route runs over two (2) days, focusing on theory preparation and practical refinement before taking the CPCS tests.
CPCS Testing
1. CPCS Theory Test
- Delivered verbally by a CPCS tester
- No writing or computer use required
- You must pass the theory test before you can take the practical test
2. CPCS Practical Test
- You will operate a 360° excavator under observation
- You must demonstrate safe, competent operation
- You must pass both the theory and practical tests to obtain your CPCS card
Important: If you fail the theory test, you cannot proceed to the practical test.
Outcome: CPCS Red Trained Operator Card
Upon successful completion of both CPCS technical tests, you will receive a:
CPCS Red Trained Operator Card (Valid for 2 Years)
This card confirms you have the core skills, knowledge and understanding required to operate safely while working towards full competence.
Progression to the Blue CPCS Competent Operator Card
To upgrade to the Blue CPCS Competence Card (valid for 5 years), you must complete an NVQ Level 2 in Plant Operations within the 2‑year validity of your Red card.
About the NVQ
- Consists of 3 units
- Completed through site observations, video evidence, written tasks, etc.
- No further exams or centre attendance required
- Assessment can be carried out on your site or remotely

The course shall cover the following elements:
- Fit and operate ancillary equipment
- Operate the A58 Excavator 360 Below 10 Tonne tracked safely and productively
- Carry out minor adjustments and routine servicing procedures
- Understand the capabilities, purposes and limitations of each machine
- Follow all necessary safety precautions
- Interpret the information provided by level pegs and profiles
- Be aware of the necessary routine adjustments and service procedures, and carry them out
- Work to levels with the aid of laser equipment
- Operate the machine to a minimum standard
- Understand which routine adjustments and safety checks are legally required with regard to lifting accessories, and know how to carry them out
Requirements
To attend this CPCS course and sit the CPCS technical tests, all candidates must meet the following entry requirements:
1. Valid Health & Safety Test (choose one):
- CITB Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) Test Operatives level or higher, passed within the last 2 years
OR
- NOCN Health & Safety Environment (HSE) Test, passed within the last 2 years
2. Proof of Identity
- A valid photo ID (passport or driving licence)
3. PPE Requirements
- Safety boots
- Hi‑vis
- Hard hat
- Gloves (if required by site)

Our A58 360 Excavator below 10 Tonne course tutors are qualified and experienced health and safety professionals, with extensive experience in Construction and Risk Management. All Trainers at EM Construction Training hold numerous health and safety qualifications such as the NEBOSH General Certificate, and the NEBOSH National Certificate in Construction Health & Safety which is well above the required industry standard to ensure that the delivery of the course is to the highest standard.
EM Construction Training can also provide companies with A58 360 Excavator below 10 Tonne Training at their venue. A trainer can be sent to the company address and deliver the course if there are a minimum of 6 candidates. Please contact the office for this service.
